HCF Tips and Tricks
Tips and Tricks from the Sigma Chi Team at Huntsman Cancer Foundation
October Tip: Sponsorships
Sponsorships are a great way to build momentum in your chapter and in your community before and after your Derby Days’ events. This time of year is especially successful to reach out to sponsors, because sponsors can receive tax benefits for their donations. As a note: Donors are only able to receive tax receipts if they donate directly through the huntsmanchallenge.org website or send in a check made out to Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
- Keep a detailed spreadsheet of who you asked, when you asked, and what their response was. This will help you stay organized and know who to follow up with, who to send thank you letters to, and will be a great resource for future Derby Days.
- Look beyond your campus community and send letters home with brothers during winter, fall, and spring breaks. Family and friends back home can be a great support to help you reach your philanthropic goals.
- If a company is unable to sponsor at that time, consider asking them if they are willing to donate something for a raffle/competition or any supplies for your events. (Ex: water bottles, shirts, equipment, venues, etc.)
- Create a Derby Days committee that helps reach out to sponsors, is a great way to get chapter members involved and increase outreach.
November Tip: Stock Donations
As the calendar year comes to an end, there is a significant opportunity for your parents, friends, and alumni to do stock donations to Huntsman Cancer Foundation and still credit your chapter. Your donors need to reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org and fill out a simple, one page form. Of course individuals and businesses can still donate with checks and online at huntsmanchallenge.org that will always be credited back to your chapter. If there have been any checks donated this semester that are not reflected on your chapter page, reach out to Tom Hanratty at email@example.com and we will help track it down.
January Tip: Research Updates
Often the Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF) team is asked what new breakthroughs in cancer research have researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) discovered. The most accessible place to find this information is on Huntsman Cancer Institute's website under "Press Releases" or by clicking here
You can select “show all” and then search for a specific cancer type, or browse for the latest news. For patient stories, updates on screening guidelines, and fundraising messages, the Circle of Hope blog is also a great resource.
February Tip: How to write and send a check to HCF
Make sure your checks are made out to Huntsman Cancer Foundation (not Huntsman Institute) and mail them to:
ATTN: Sigma Chi
Huntsman Cancer Foundation
500 Huntsman Way
Salt Lake City, UT 84108
You must include a note with the check, letting us know your school, chapter, and who to give credit to. Please send checks as soon as possible so so we can process it and give your chapter credit. Some checks need to be cashed within a specified period, or they will be voided. Once you have mailed the check, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, letting us know so we can keep a lookout.
The Huntsman Foundation team does their best to put donations into the Huntsman Challenge website as soon as they can. If you do not see your check on the website after a couple of weeks from your mail date, please reach out to us.
