HCF Tips and Tricks

Tips and Tricks from the Sigma Chi Team at Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF).

October Tip: Sponsorships

Sponsorships are a great way to build momentum in your chapter and in your community before and after Derby Days events. This month is an especially successful time of year to reach out to sponsors because they can receive tax benefits for their donations. Note: donors are only able to receive tax receipts if they donate directly through this website or send in a check made out to Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

Tips:

  1.  Keep a spreadsheet listing the people you asked, when you asked them, and what their response was. This will help you stay organized, follow up, and send thank you letters, and will be a great resource for future Derby Days.
  2.  Look beyond your campus community and send letters home with brothers during winter, fall, and spring breaks. Family and friends back home can be a great support system when it comes to helping you reach your philanthropic goals.
  3.  If a company is unable to sponsor, consider asking them if they are willing to donate a prize for a raffle/competition, or event supplies like water bottles, shirts, equipment, venues, etc.
  4.  Create a Derby Days committee that reaches out to sponsors. It's a great way to get chapter members involved and increase outreach.

November Tip: Stock Donations

As the calendar year comes to an end, there is a significant opportunity for your parents, friends, and alumni to make stock donations to Huntsman Cancer Foundation and still credit your chapter. Ask your donor to reach out to [email protected]—they'll need to fill out a simple one-page form.

January Tip: Research Updates

The Huntsman Cancer Foundation team is often asked what new breakthroughs the researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute have discovered. The best place to find this information is on Huntsman Cancer Institute's website under Press Releases. You can select Show All and then search for a specific cancer type, or browse for the latest news.

For patient stories, updates on screening guidelines, and fundraising messages, the Circle of Hope blog is also a great resource.

February Tip: How to Write and Send a Check to HCF

Make your checks out to Huntsman Cancer Foundation (not institute) and mail them to:

ATTN: Sigma Chi
Huntsman Cancer Foundation
500 Huntsman Way
Salt Lake City, UT 84108

You must include a note with the check letting us know your school, chapter, and who to give credit to. Please send checks as soon as possible so so we can process them and give your chapter credit. Some checks need to be cashed within a specified period or they will be voided. Once you have mailed the check, please email [email protected] to let us know, and we'll keep an eye out for it.

The Huntsman Cancer Foundation team does their best to put donations into the Huntsman Challenge website as soon as they can. If you do not see your check on the website two weeks after you mailed it, please reach out to us.
